Keeping USSD Reliable: Why Moniepoint Is Adding a ₦10 Transaction Fee

by Chidinma Nwonye

Moniepoint USSD N10 fee.jpg

It's reassuring to know that you can easily send money, buy airtime/data, reset your PIN, and more, without an internet connection, just by dialling *5573#.

But here’s the reality: behind every successful transaction are networks, partners, and systems working behind the scenes to make it happen, and the cost of keeping them running has recently skyrocketed.

And so, we’re left with two options: cut back on services or slow them down. But we made you a promise,  banking that works 24/7 at a speed you love. To keep that promise, we’re introducing a small flat fee of ₦10 for most USSD banking services, starting August 22, 2025.

This way, you can continue to enjoy a smooth banking experience, whether you’re topping up airtime or data, or checking your balance on the go, simply by dialling *5573#.

What’s Changing

N10 USSD Fee.jpg

Starting August 22, dialling 5573# will attract a small ₦10 fee per successful session for select USSD services. See the breakdown below:

Billable services (₦10 per successful session):

  • Sending money to other banks or Moniepoint accounts

  • Buying airtime (for yourself or someone else)

  • Buying data

  • Checking your balance or account details

  • Resetting your PIN

Free services (no charge):

  • Getting an OTP

  • Activating your account

  • Blocking your account or card

We’ll keep this list updated as we go. Some services might move between the “billable” and “free” lists in the future, depending on how costs and market conditions change, but you’ll always be informed ahead of time.

How It Works

*5573#.jpg

We want you to know exactly what to expect when using our USSD code, so there are no surprises. Here’s the simple process:

1. Getting Your Consent

The first time you try a billable USSD transaction after August 22, you’ll see a message informing you about the new ₦10 fee and asking for your consent before proceeding.

  • Press 1 to agree and continue.

  • Press 0 to cancel.

Once you agree, we’ll save your consent, so you won’t need to approve it every time.

2. When You’re Billed

If you have enough money in your account, ₦10 will be deducted once the transaction is successful. If your balance is too low, the transaction won’t go through. You’ll see this message:

"Your Moniepoint account balance is not sufficient to perform this action. Please fund your account and try again."

3. Free Services Stay Free

If you’re using a USSD service we’ve marked as free, you won’t be charged, even if you’ve previously given consent.

This way, you’re always in control and always aware of what you’re paying for.

Key Dates & Next Steps, 2025

  • Effective Date: The ₦10 USSD session fee starts August 22, 2025

  • Check Your Balance: Before starting a billable USSD transaction, ensure you have enough funds to cover both the transaction and the ₦10 fee.

  • Stay Informed: We’ll continue to share updates through SMS, email, and our website whenever there are changes to billable or free services.

  • Customer Support: If you have questions, reach out to our support team at [email protected] to guide you through the new process.

Final Words

At Moniepoint, we’re all about making banking reliable, simple, and fast, whether you’re sending money, running your business, or checking your balance.
